Livin' in a Sanctuary

I was just going through my pictures and came across this one of an old church in a tiny town in Texas. My husband and I have this funny dream about living in an old church building. We thought about purchasing this building and converting it into a livable place, but we discovered that it would take much more money than we had available. Oh well....nice idea. Now we're living in Hawaii, which is pretty much a sanctuary in itself.

Mutations Evolution's Enemy?
Q: How are mutations evolution’s enemy?
A: Mutations are changes that occur in our genes—our DNA. They are the result of such things as harmful radiation. Evolutionists admit that such changes cause mistakes in our genes. But they claim that sometimes mutations can produce new information. For instance, to change a reptile into a bird—scales to feathers, for example—requires a lot of added new information not previously available in the genes of the reptile.
But Dr. Lee Spetner, formerly of Johns Hopkins University, has spent years searching for that one piece of evidence to show that a mutation can actually increase information. In his book Not By Chance, he said:
But in all the reading I’ve done in the life-sciences literature, I’ve never found a mutation that added information … All point mutations that have been studied on the molecular level turn out to reduce the genetic information and not to increase it.
In other words, real science in the present shows clearly that mutations cause things to lose information. This is exactly what the Bible teaches: because of sin and the curse, everything is running down, not improving.

Homeschooling on the Road to Hana

As a homeschool mom, I'm always concerned about providing a well-balanced education and I tend to panic at the thought of the number of textbooks floating around in the world that we could be using. "Which one is best? Should I try this method or that method?" I feel the urge to cram every possible bit of information into my children and make every life event an educational experience.
Well....my husband had this crazy idea that we should drive the road to Hana while his parents were visiting Maui. And of all days, he would pick a school day. I wondered, "Do I go on the trip or do I stay home and teach the children?" I finally gave in to the notion that I might miss something if I didn't go, so I had the brilliant idea of bringing our schoolbooks along in order to hold class in the vehicle. What kind of a nut would do that on the Hana Highway??!!
The Hana Highway is a two-hour journey (that's a one-way trip) and it includes 617 switchbacks along the cliffsides and jungles of Maui. There are many magnificent waterfalls to see along the way. The bright blue sky rises above the deep blue ocean and the white waves smash into the black lava rocks along the shore. The plants and trees are the greenest of greens and they are dotted with the orange, yellow, pink and red colors of various flowers. The aroma of a floral shop invades the car and the smell of life is invigorating.
Back to the education part: here I am, brilliant teacher of two, trying to hammer away at the textbooks and I begin to feel nauseous from the constant turning of the car. Suddenly it dawns on me.....I'm missing out on one of the best experiences of life! Look at this place! Here I am sticking my nose in a textbook and trying to get my children to think about prepositions and contractions in the midst of the most educational experience ever! I begin to feel quite dumb as I realize my mistake. "Kids, put the books away and let's look outside." Ahhhh. That's more like it.
We drove into a tiny town on the coast that, only in recent years, got a road into it. About 20 Hawaiian people live in this community and they are the only residents of this small town nestled in the green peninsula that juts out into the blue water. Along the coast, there are rusty remnants of a harbor where ships once brought in supplies for the village. Our children ate Hawaiian banana bread made from the bananas growing there. We saw an old church made of lava rock that sits quietly looking out over the waters. We journeyed down a dirt path that eventually led to a pool of water that received a majestic waterfall. As I stood and tried hard to press these images into my memory, I asked myself, "What textbook can teach this?" I told my children, "Look at this. Take a picture in your mind. Never forget what you're seeing." I'm so thankful for a successful day at school.

The Guy With The Pentagram....
From a previous post, you may recall the story I told about a man that my husband tried to share the gospel with. He had rejected the gospel and told my husband he couldn't listen to it. When my husband asked why, the man pulled a pentagram out of his shirt. My husband told him that it didn't matter what he had done; Jesus wasn't threatened by a pentagram and He can give you a new life. The man went on his way and we've been praying for him.
So....One week later, my husband ran into him on the street again. My husband began talking with him, but the man didn't remember ever seeing him before. After awhile, he told my husband, "I won't listen to anything about Jesus unless you tell me something about myself....something you couldn't know." My husband replied, "Well, all I can tell you is that the pentagram around your neck won't get you into Heaven." The guy gasped....."No way!! How did you know I have a pentagram in my shirt? That's freaky, dude!" My husband didn't want to deceive him, so he told him that he had spoken with him a week ago, but the guy said, "No way. I've never seen you." He agreed to listen and he took a gospel tract along with him. We're waiting for encounter #3. Isn't it funny how God works???

Kingdom Adventure

Settling in to life on Maui has been a wonderful experience. At nighttime I find myself experiencing the blues of missing my Texas family, but the morning greets me with the promises of God and the call to stay focused on the mission that's been set before us.
Today, we took a shuttle bus, which was donated by the airport, and we drove it several miles down a winding, jungle road to the Youth With A Mission base. We picked up 23 young people who are currently preparing for their missions to other countries. From there, we drove down to Paia and began walking the streets and beaches. My children and I prayed as others found people to talk to about Jesus. We also had worship time in the park next to Baldwin Beach (pictured above) and it was wonderful watching curious people come and join in. My husband did some teaching among the YWAM-ers and had my father-in-law share some advice about telling people the good news! (My father-in-law is the guy with the really white legs, standing in the water with his hands raised....his typical posture)
One interesting encounter: My husband handed a gospel tract to a man and told him it was about Jesus and having peace with God. The man quickly handed it back and said, "I can't!" My husband asked why. The man pulled a pentagram out of his shirt. My husband told him, "Jesus isn't threatened by a pentagram. It doesn't matter what you've done, where you've been....you can have new life." The man took the tract and walked away. After a moment, he came back quickly and handed it back again, saying, "No, I can't." He turned to go away and after walking a few feet, he returned once more and said, "Well, I guess I can hang onto that. Is that okay?" My husband gave him the tract once again and the man left before anyone could tell him anymore. It is our prayer that he finds deliverance from his demons and falls in love with Jesus.
The Dalai Lama is coming next month to dedicate some strange thing that has been erected in the town.....it's called a 'Stupa.' I guess it's supposed to bring peace or something like that. The strange thing is that several months before we moved here, I had a dream in which I saw this 'stupa' and my husband and I were talking to a man while sitting on the third level of it. We were talking about Jesus Christ. I had never seen anything like it and never thought much about the dream until we saw it this year. Last year, when we were here, it was not built, so I had not seen it previously. Because of this dream, I felt drawn to pray that every spirit that was not of God would be cast down in that place.....and that somehow, when people would walk over there, they would come to the knowledge that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
There were many great conversations that took place. It was so neat to feel the atmosphere change. Jesus said, "The Kingdom of God is at hand." That means that the Kingdom of God is within reach, and I'm glad that we could feel that today in the tiny town of Paia. We found that most people were happy to receive this message. There's a hunger in the air.....perhaps such a beautiful creation makes people hungry to know the Artist.
